As part of the £35m MyWorld programme, we are searching for two motivated individuals to create the next generation of content capture and creation tools for the creative industries across film, TV, games and immersive Virtual and Augmented/Mixed Reality. This work will make use of the latest advances in Machine Learning technology, e.g. generative AI, trained on datasets of world-leading quality obtained via our unique CAMERA Studio facilities.

Project Focus

We have two 18-month positions available targeted across a range of activities but there is great scope for input in specific projects from candidates and the project is intended as a collaborative undertaking alongside the other half of our MyWorld team at the University of Bristol.

Topics of focus include:

1. Beyond SMPL: Building Anatomically Accurate Digital Human Models

2. Next generation virtual production with light-fields

3. Creating data-driven 3D human representations that combine the fidelity of implicit models with explicit controls preferred by animators

4. Exploring the capabilities of state-of-the-art large language models and Large Reasoning Models

The following section details the brand-new equipment available that you will be given priority access to. This work will be interdisciplinary and collaborative and will span research across computer vision, computer graphics and machine learning. Candidates can come from a background in any but should be motivated to expand and learn techniques and theory from across the disciplines; all areas will build on firm foundations in maths and programming.

CAMERA is an established research centre with a track record in the fields of motion capture, analysis and work with the creative industries. We have a strong track record of supporting the career development of our researcher including four former research associates now with faculty positions. Our intention is to help support and develop the future leaders of the field and there will be many opportunities to showcase and champion the new research and technology developed on a global stage. We also hope that you will help advise the CAMERA project and PhD students working on aligned topics.

The CAMERA Studio

As part of our recent expansion we are very excited about the opening of the new CAMERA studio which uniquely comprises four state-of-the-art capture stages:

 1. Motion Capture Stage: Our marker based motion-capture facility is centred on 36 26MP Vicon Valkyrie cameras that can be used to capture highly detailed movement (e.g. individual fingers) as well as group interactions (many participants) in the large capture volume. We are interested in capturing truly realistic motion: this could be for training or validating markerless capture systems or biomechanical analysis. We have force-plates to capture ground-reaction forces and suspension harnesses to simulate constrained motion (e.g. movement under Lunar or Martian gravity).
 2. Face/Body Light Stage and Photogrammetry Rig: The face capture system comprises a light-stage from Esper with 25MP cameras and high-speed lighting control. The photogrammetry rig allows us to perform body reconstructions, e.g. for creating avatars. Combined, they allow us to capture cinematic quality datasets, e.g. to investigate training data for automatic avatar creation and rig construction suitable for high-end visual effects.
 3. 4D Volumetric Capture Stage: This new room scale stage allows for free-form 4D capture or lightfield capture using 48 24MP Emergent machine vision cameras. This will allow capture of high-quality, dynamic datasets and we are interested in using new view synthesis to provide virtual camera paths as well as new methods for artistic control and editing of volumetric data (e.g. allowing NERFs or similar to be used in immersive AR/VR productions or in visual effects).
 4. Virtual Production Stage: This brand new 12m by 3m LED wall will allow us to develop the next generation of capture and editing tools for media production. After initial success with projects such as ILM’s work on the Mandalorian, there is an increasing demand for virtual production. Access to a state-of-the-art background wall plus movable front lighting walls and ceiling panels will let us work on the next generation of production and visual effects pipelines. We are particularly interested in generation of the highest quality capture, e.g. recreation of lightfields for lighting accuracy, and to provide the most intuitive creative control for the director, actors and crew.

You will work alongside members of our excellent studio team who have long-standing experience across both technical and creative/artistic aspects of the studio. Collaboratively, they will assist with capturing exciting and challenging new datasets or showcasing our research with internationally leading studios and award-winning creative teams (e.g. DNEG and Aardman Animations).

CAMERA and MyWorld Partners

There are many collaboration opportunities with our external partners across the CAMERA centre and the wider MyWorld programme. Examples include the Foundry, a world-leading provider of tools to the Visual Effects (VFX) and Post-Production industry and DNEG the internationally acclaimed Post-Production house with numerous accolades including Academy Awards for Dune, Tenet, First Man, Blade Runner 2049, Ex Machina, Interstellar and Inception.

Applications are invited for a Postdoctoral Research Associate (PDRA) to take a key role in the development of a new analytical framework for developing dexterous soft robotic manipulators. The role is funded by The successful applicant will be based at the 星空体育官网.

The emerging technology of soft robotics exploits flexible and compliant materials for their design. They are able to translate fundamental biological principles into new engineering design rules or combine life-like components into a synthetic structure to create robotic systems that perform very much like a natural system. Soft robotic systems provide a route to increase body flexibility, improve dexterous handling in unstructured environments, enable adaptability of wearable and medical devices, and safer human-machine interaction. Machine Learning (ML) is an emerging technology with significant potential in integrating and embodying soft robotics technologies, but it is in its infancy in this area. This high-risk, high-gain project will provide a step-change and lead to advances at the frontiers of knowledge in soft robotics by creating a new analytical modelling framework which involves new model- and learning-based approaches and their integration to allow modelling, prediction, control and understanding of soft robotic manipulators. The new framework will address and overcome “frustrating unpredictability”, “surprising results”, “ineffectiveness and inaccuracy”, and “unreliability” of the soft manipulators during motion, as well as “a lack of understanding and tools” challenge during research on soft robotics.

The PDRA will be responsible for delivering high-quality research on the topic, including:

 • Design and development of soft manipulators.
 • Development of a multimodal sensing system and the learning-based models of soft manipulators.
 • Model assessment and evaluation.
 • Creation of an analytical modelling framework to enable an understanding and the development of dexterous soft robotic manipulators

This role will suit you if you:

 • Hold a PhD degree in a subject area of direct relevance for the project.
 • Have previous experience in one or more of the following: modelling, design, control or prototyping of soft robots and systems.
 • Have excellent analytical, problem-solving, and project management skills.
 • Are self-motivated and have excellent communication skills.

You will be responsible for planning and performing your own research activities. You will be expected to take an active role in supporting PhD and undergraduate research students within the laboratory. You should have excellent interpersonal and communication skills to work as part of a team and discuss your work with a range of audiences.

<![CDATA[Research Associate in Peptide Chemistry and Bioconjugation (AP12788)]]> /jobs/rss/click.aspx?ref=AP12788 /jobs/rss/click.aspx?ref=AP12788 星空体育官网 the role

We are seeking an industrious, independent, and ambitious postdoctoral researcher to join a multi-institutional project aimed funded by Versus Arthritis focussed on developing a novel peptide-siRNA conjugate for the treatment of osteoarthritis (OA). In this project, you will be involved in the synthesis of peptide-siRNA conjugates that are designed to bind specific receptors to enable targeted delivery of disease-modifying nucleic acid agents directly to affected joint cells.

OA is a degenerative joint disorder and a leading cause of pain and disability, affecting over 500 million people worldwide. Currently, no approved treatments exist that can halt or reverse disease progression. Existing pain relief options are often ineffective or associated with adverse side effects. Small interfering RNAs (siRNAs) have emerged as a promising new class of therapeutics with unique advantages over traditional drugs. Six siRNA-based therapies are already approved for clinical use. However, a major hurdle in applying siRNA therapeutics to OA is the efficient and targeted delivery of siRNAs to joint-resident cells.

星空体育官网 you

You will hold a PhD in organic chemistry, medicinal chemistry, chemical biology, or a related discipline.

You should have practical experience of peptide synthesis, linker chemistries, and the preparation of conjugates with biomolecules, especially nucleic acids.

You should also have a strong track record of carrying out academic or industrial research at the interface of chemistry and biology, ideally evidenced by publications in peer-reviewed journals.

Additional information

The post is available for 12 months and will be primarily supervised by Dr Ian Eggleston (Department of Life Sciences, 星空体育官网). You will also work closely with Prof Mark Lindsay 星空体育官网, and colleagues at University of Birmingham (Professor Simon Jones) and University Nottingham (Prof Vicky Chapman and Dr Federico Dajas-Bailador).

Interviews will take place in the week commencing 11 August 2025.

For an informal discussion relating to this vacancy, please contact Dr Ian Eggleston (ie203@bath.ac.uk) and Prof. Mark Lindsay (mal37@bath.ac.uk)
